IDEAL Destination Steardship Program

The IDEAL Destination Stewardship Program provides a structured framework to embed stewardship into tourism for rural, recreation, and gateway communities, using the global benchmark for sustainable destination management. Tourism Impact Services authored the IDEAL Destination Standard and designed—and continues to administer—the operational program that moves destinations from sustainability aspiration to measurable, certified action, equipping destinations to strengthen resilience, safeguard natural and cultural resources, manage visitor impacts, and foster long-term stewardship success.

Setting the Global Benchmark for Sustainable Destination Stewardship

Framework Design, Program Operationalization, and Real-World Certification Success

Originally launched through a multi-year sustainability initiative in Vail, Colorado, the Mountain IDEAL Program evolved to meet the growing needs of recreation-based communities facing the pressures of tourism growth and environmental change. Tourism Impact Services built on this foundation to create the IDEAL Destination Standard — a globally recognized, third-party certified framework that provides communities with the tools to embed stewardship into tourism governance, improve quality of life, and safeguard natural and cultural resources.

Our Approach:

  • Authored the IDEAL Destination Standard to align with the highest global sustainability criteria, formally recognized by the Global Sustainable Tourism Council.

  • Built a full operational program, including self-assessment tools, quality management systems (QMS), cohort-based learning models, and third-party audit pathways.

  • Guided nationally recognized destinations such as Vail, Breckenridge, Aspen, and Park City through IDEAL certification, achieving top international accreditation through Green Destinations.

  • Applied IDEAL methodologies to stewardship assessments, strategic plans, and statewide stewardship programs (e.g., Outdoor NC) across Alaska, California, North Carolina, Utah, and Wyoming.

  • Fostered a growing network of IDEAL partners committed to regenerative tourism, responsible visitor management, and transformational community engagement.

Impact:

  • Elevated IDEAL-certified destinations as the only internationally accredited sustainable destinations in the United States.

  • Operationalized sustainability, accessibility, and stewardship as core community and governance practices.

  • Strengthened resilience, biodiversity protection, public lands stewardship, and visitor experience enhancement across participating destinations.

  • Inspired peer-to-peer learning networks and community-driven stewardship innovations across rural and resort destinations alike.

  • Established IDEAL as a scalable model for transformational destination management, rooted in real-world best practices and continuous improvement.
