A Thriving Destination Starts with Stewardship.
Core Values
-
Tourism should enhance, not exploit, local communities.
-
Stewardship must be structured, not just aspirational.
-
Inclusion and Accessibility Strengthen Destinations.
-
Resilient destinations plan ahead, ensuring sustainable visitor management.
-
Planning isn’t enough—execution is everything.
-
Collaboration between tourism, recreation, and conservation is essential.
How TIS Embeds These Values into Our Work
-
Real-World Expertise. Our leadership brings professional and lived experience, ensuring accessibility and sustainability are implemented with authenticity.
-
Empowering Access. We create transparent, user-centered solutions that enable visitors of all abilities to explore outdoor destinations independently and with dignity.
-
Measurable Impact. Expanding equitable outdoor access strengthens local economies, supports conservation, and enhances community well-being.
-
Collaboration from Day One. We engage land managers, destination leaders, and accessibility advocates to build practical, long-term stewardship solutions.
-
Sustainable Recreation & Stewardship. We ensure that expanded access is balanced with responsible environmental protection.
Tourism Impact Services (TIS) helps destinations embed resilience in their tourism economies by turning stewardship into a functional system.
-
TIS Helps Destinations Build Long-Term Resilience Through Stewardship.
-
Without structured stewardship, tourism can strain public lands, disrupt communities, and threaten long-term economic stability.
-
We don’t just create plans—we develop actionable, scalable frameworks that embed stewardship into tourism planning, ensuring that tourism strengthens, rather than overwhelms, the places people love.
-
Why Work With TIS?
-
We create real solutions, not just reports. Stewardship must be a long-term operational practice—not just a policy statement.
-
We bridge tourism, conservation, and community development. TIS connects the dots between destination marketing, outdoor recreation, and public land management.
-
We prioritize execution. Our frameworks provide structured pathways to implementation, ensuring DMOs and partners can act with confidence.
Meet Our Founder

-
TIS was founded by Bobby Chappell, a conservation biologist and sustainable tourism strategist with over 20 years of experience bridging tourism, outdoor recreation, and public land management.
-
Bobby’s first job in tourism was at a ski resort in Colorado—an experience that ignited his passion for how tourism shapes both communities and landscapes. Over the years, he has:
-
Led conservation research assessing visitor use impacts on critically endangered habitats.
-
Worked on the front lines of nearly every sector of the hospitality industry.
-
Played an influential role in advancing sustainable tourism worldwide.
-
After leading global sustainability initiatives at Sustainable Travel International, Bobby saw a critical gap—destinations needed structured frameworks to integrate stewardship into tourism, not just talk about it.
-
That’s why he created TIS—to turn sustainability aspirations into real, measurable impact.
-
Bobby is deeply committed to helping communities thrive, especially those in his backyard of Southern Appalachia. When he’s not working on destination stewardship strategies, he can be found hiking backcountry trails in search of native brook trout, advocating for greater accessibility in outdoor recreation, and exploring public lands with his family.
